In March 1st 2008, HMS ITB held the excursion activity for HMS 2004 and 2005 to Platform Fabrication Yard in PT. Gunanusa Utama Fabricators, Cilegon. The area is located at Margasari Village, Pulo Ampel Sub-district, Serang, Banten, Indonesia. Based on its histories, PT Gunanusa Utama that was founded in 1980 is the only Indonesian fabrication company. Actually, that was the last trip on its excursion after going round Rasuna Epicentrum and Banjir Kanal Timur in Jakarta. By visiting the fabrication yards, it can be seen that they have modern facilities and capabilities to fabricate Offshore Platforms (Jacket, Deck, and Module) and Floating Facilities Equipment (Mooring Buoys, Floating Production Unit, Tension Leg Platform, and Floating Storage and Offloading Vessels). For project purposes, some famous clients such as Pertamina, British Petroleum, Total E&P, Chevron, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Cnooc, PetroChina, Hess, PTTEP, and ONGC had made a contract to fabricate the oil & gas facilities.

During site fabrication visit, all participants were accompanied by some employees who are graduated from Civil Engineering ITB. As guides, they explained about particular subjects in platform fabrication industries and the responsibility of Civil/Structural Engineers who were charging in company’s projects. It was a great opportunity for the participators to understand since they had to choose one of the civil professions for their career in the future. Therefore, they would be ready for facing in the real application related to their background in the real world.

After introduction session which held in main hall, they were directed to enjoy standing in the topside. All topside parts were consecutively described including its functions. In addition, they could look at a jacket closely to understand about its behavior. Instead of looking at Gunung Garuda or AISC steel properties, some profiles (IWF, Channel, and tubular) could be seen directly on the yard. As the main task for Civil/Structure Engineers in Fabrication Companies, understanding drawing from Consultant Companies was importantly introduced so that the appropriate fabrication would be definitely produced before it was used by contractor companies to the further stages. Certainly, transportation knowledge had given as the process of offshore platform after leaving the yard. Load-out and Lifting are the options for moving both topside and jacket from fabrication yard to barge.

In the end of excursion session, they were acquainted about company recruitments in case PT. Gunanusa Utama could make interest to join. Comprehensive Management Trainee Program is the fresh graduate preference that can be applied. Finally, photo session was the closing activities before saying see you again instead of saying good bye.
